Separate drop-safes recommended for cash to prevent odor absorption (banks reject cannabis-scented currency).

Vault & Safe Specifications
Video cameras at all vault access points. Footage retained 60–90 days. Must operate on backup power.
OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) electronic access control. Multi-factor authentication required. Mantraps or turnstiles recommended.
Comprehensive intrusion detection system. Seismic sensors on vault walls recommended. 24/7 central monitoring.
Vault must accommodate both cannabis inventory and cash operations with proper segregation.
Requirements by Operation Type
Vault requirements differ significantly between retail dispensaries, cultivation facilities, and manufacturing operations. Each license type has unique storage challenges.
Retail Dispensary
- Primary vault for bulk inventory and overnight storage
- Working stock in display cabinets/drawers during hours
- Self-closing, self-locking day-gate for intra-day access
- Separate drop-safe for cash operations
- Vault must be locked when store is closed — NO exceptions
Cultivation Facility
- Separate secured zones for: receiving, quarantine, and destruction staging
- DEA-approved 10-gauge steel wire-mesh cages often used for large volumes
- Complete inventory segregation by batch and testing status
- Heavier security infrastructure due to product volume
- Seed-to-sale tracking system integration (Metrc/BioTrack)
Manufacturing / Processing
- Segregated storage for raw materials, work-in-progress, and finished product
- Separate quarantine vault for batches awaiting lab results
- Failed/contaminated product held in secure destruction-staging area
- Often large-format modular vaults due to product volume
- Strict chain-of-custody documentation at every stage
